These gluten-free apple fritters are a delicious way to treat yourself to some dessert! They are made with coconut flour, eggs, almond milk, cinnamon, sweetener and of course, apple chunks. Gluten-free, grain-free, low-carb, Paleo and dairy-free.
I don’t usually eat fried foods from restaurants or prepackaged fried foods because they make me feel pretty crappy. This past weekend, we went out to Buffalo Wild Wings, and I had some of the traditional wings in a Parmesan garlic sauce.
Now, I’m not entirely sure whether it was the sauce or the frying oil that caused my issues, but I had a headache and some stomach issues the next day. It’s kind of annoying, but at the same time, I am so glad that I am in tune with my body enough to know when I eat something that doesn’t agree with me.
These apple fritters are also fried, but since they are made at home, you get to control the oil used for frying! Alternatively, you could go ahead and bake them for an even healthier sweet treat! I am a fan of using refined coconut oil for frying, because it has a much higher smoke point than traditional vegetable oil, and none of the coconut taste.
While I typically do not eat fried food on a normal basis, it is nice every once in awhile to quench that thirst for it, so to say. It’s also nice to reduce the guilt surrounding fried foods too, and frying at home certainly helps there too. I don’t get any of the issues that come along with foods fried in vegetable oil.
When I say fried at home, what I mean is pan fried, with just a bit of oil. I don’t ever really deep fry anything, it seems like such a waste of oil to me! These can certainly be deep fried, but I am a minimalist, and if you get the same result with less oil, I will choose less oil!
To make these gluten-free apple fritters, you’ll need some coconut flour, eggs, almond or coconut milk, sweetener, cinnamon, and of course, apple chunks! I recommend cutting the chunks into pretty small bits.
You’ll see in the photo below that I cut mine into pretty big pieces, and they were right on the verge of being too big, but they still worked perfectly. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl except for the apple chunks, which you’ll add in once the dough is well combined.
Once the oil is nice and hot, drop the dough by spoonfuls into the hot oil. If you use just a small amount of oil for frying, you’ll want to flatten the dough, so that it cooks through in the middle. Fry until a nice golden brown, which should only take a few minutes.
I should really invest in an air fryer one of these days, but at this point it does not make sense because we have some big plans coming up. More on this in the coming weeks and months 🙂

Gluten-Free Apple Fritters (Low-Carb, Paleo)
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup coconut flour (32 g)
- 2 tablespoons dry sweetener I recommend Swerve or pyure for low-carb or coconut sugar for Paleo
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 eggs
- 1/4 cup almond or coconut milk (60 mL)
- 1/2 apple chopped into 1/2 inch cubes, you can reduce the amount for low-carb if the carb count is too high
- 1/4 cup coconut oil for frying
Instructions
- Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Mix coconut flour, sweetener and cinnamon in a bowl and mix, ensuring that all clumps are removed from coconut flour. Mix eggs and milk of choice in with dry ingredients until well-combined. Mix in apple cubes and stir.
- Drop a tiny bit of batter into the hot oil. It should sizzle and turn a golden brown slowly. If it turns black or golden brown very quickly, the oil is too hot. Turn down the heat a bit and wait a few minutes if this happens.
- Drop spoonfuls of batter into the pan and flatten slightly. Allow to cook until the edges are golden brown. Flip and cook until the other side is golden as well.
