A special treat for your dog, these birthday pupcakes are great for celebrations such as gotcha days and birthdays! Grain-free, dairy-free.
It’s puppy party time!
It’s a special time here right now, as Blaze just turned 10 years old! I can’t believe how fast time flies. I adopted him the day before he turned 3 years old, and I still wonder how it’s been 7 whole years since then!
He’s been the best dog I could have asked for, and loves traveling all over the country, sniffing all the new smells and hiking all the fun trails.
He has been slowing down a bit, and doesn’t enjoy the warm weather much any more, but he loves the cooler weather tremendously, and still has tons of energy for exploring when it’s chillier out.
Of course we had to have a special birthday celebration for this dignified dude, and I though making “pupcakes” would be a great way to celebrate! Let me tell you, he LOVED these, as you can see from that wide-eyed expression on his face.
He pretty much followed me around the rest of the day, wondering when another one would magically appear in my hand for him. Luckily, I made a whole batch for him to enjoy in the next few days. What a lucky guy 🙂
Ok my dog is begging, how do I make these??
While I do love treating Blaze to something special on occasion, I don’t want it to take the entire day to prepare. What is great about these birthday pupcakes, is that the prep is super-easy and only takes a few minutes in a single bowl!
Simply add in all the ingredients (coconut flour, egg, carrot and applesauce), stir until there are no clumps of egg left, and then scoop into baking cups. Pop them into the oven, and then take them out when they begin to brown.
Allow them to cool fully before feeding to your furry friends. We definitely wouldn’t want any burned tongues.
Can I use another type of flour?
If your dog is gluten-free, I would recommend something like chickpea flour or oat flour, although these are not as optimal as coconut flour. I like coconut flour because it’s relatively inexpensive, and seems to be the easiest on my dogs tummy.
Know that if you switch types of flour, that the ratio of flour needed will be different. I suggest mixing all the wet ingredients together first, then adding in the flour until you achieve the right texture.
Can I make these without the eggs?
Yes you can. They won’t stick together as well, but you can add in more applesauce, or some mashed banana instead of the eggs.
Some people also use a flax egg in place of a regular egg, although I have not tried this. I also recommend doing your own research on flax before adding it to your dogs diet. There is some risk of toxicity, although it will depend on the amount, and the size of your dog.

Birthday Pupcakes (Grain-Free)
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup diced carrots (approximately 5 baby carrots)
- 1/4 cup applesauce (63 g) make sure you buy the plain with no sugar added! The cinnamon is fine, as it is safe for dogs.
- 3 large eggs
- 1/3 cup coconut flour (37 g) or as much as needed to thicken the batter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Mix all ingredients together in a bowl and stir until well-mixed. Add to paper or silicone baking cups (I love these silicone ones!). If your batter is too liquidy, you can add more coconut flour, a tablespoon at a time.
- Bake until the edges begin to brown, 20-25 minutes or so.

This looks so fun! What a great recipe to make with kids!
Thanks so much, Suzanne!
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
You can keep them at room temperature for 5-7 days, a couple weeks in the fridge, or for several months in the freezer.
Can I substitute the applesauce?
Yes, mashed banana would also work well.
