A delicious treat for your best four-legged friend, two ways. Peanut butter and the bad-breath buster! Grain-free, gluten-free.
These homemade grain-free dog treats are a tasty treat for your best puppy friend. They can be prepared two ways, peanut butter and the “bad breath buster,” as I have dubbed it, which contain coconut, parsley and mint.
These are both a huge hit around here. My greyhound Blaze now expects one after dinner every night, since he has been taste-testing them for awhile now. He never turns any of them down, so they must be tasty!
These treats are also incredibly simple to make. The peanut butter ones only require three ingredients; natural peanut butter, coconut flour and an egg. The bad breath busters only need a few more; coconut flour, coconut oil, parsley, mint and an egg. Simply mix together, roll into balls and form into cookie shapes, that’s it!
You could also roll the dough out using a rolling pin, and go to town using cookie cutters. I don’t have any, so round cookies were the most logical choice. I did try to form one into a bone shape using just my fingers, I don’t recommend it. It didn’t go so well, which is why you don’t see it in these pictures ;).
These store well in an air-tight container at room temperature for up to two weeks. They do tend to soften up a bit over time, so I find that it’s best to use them up fairly quick. I bet your dog will agree 🙂
I hope your canine friends enjoy these tasty treats. Not that I’ve tried them myself, but they are made using human-grade ingredients, so I suppose you could if you wanted to. Then your dog might get jealous though. If you do make these homemade grain-free dog treats for your dog or yourself, let me know below in the comments what they think of them!

Hi
Your coconut flour is measured in cups could you please tell me what the equivalent is in oz please? thank you
Hi Could you please tell me the equivalent of coconut flour in oz thank you
Yes of course. 1/2 cup of coconut flour is equal to 2 oz.
Actually 1/2 cup equals 4 oz
That conversion only works for liquids. If you use a scale to measure the weight of the flour, you will see that 1/2 cup is equal to approximately 2 oz in weight.
Is there no peanut butter in the breath buster cookies, or was it inadvertently omitted?
The breath buster does not have peanut butter. Only the peanut butter one 🙂
Hi! I’ve been looking for an easy low carb dog treat recipe, thanks for this! One question, do you know how long these keep? I have 3 BIG dogs, and want to make the treats maybe once a week or so. Will they last a week in an airtight container do you know? Thanks!
Thanks so much for checking out the recipe! They should definitely last at least a week. I kept mine for that long and they were just fine. I wouldn’t keep them much longer than that though. Hope your dogs love them, mine certainly does 🙂
I thought you were not suppose to give dogs chocolate period
You should not. Neither of these recipes have chocolate in them.
Are these crunchy hard like milk bones?
Not quite as hard as a milk bone, but they do come out pretty crunchy.
My dog is sensitive to eggs so I substituted 2 T ground flax seed and 6 T water. This made dough dough so I could form into balls and the flatten. I think he liked them, he stole one from cookie sheet before I got in oven. Thank you.joy
Haha, I love it! So glad your dog enjoyed them. I’m glad the flax egg worked well, I will have to remember that in the future.
Re: Coconut flour measurement in ounces.
I don’t believe that a half a cup equals 2 ounces. A cup is 8 ounces. A half a cup would be 4 ounces.
Ounces are based on the weight of the ingredient. If you weighted the coconut flour, you would see that one cup of it is equivalent to 4 oz.
Hello,
How long are these cookies good for?
Hi Nikki, these should last about a week at room temperature in an air-tight container. They should last a little longer in the fridge (10 days or so). Hope that helps!
If I wanted to make bigger batches, could they be frozen in airtight containers for longer storage?
I have not tried to freeze them personally, but others have told me it worked for them. Thanks for asking!
Can I use normal peanut butter rather than natural? Is natural just your preference?
You can certainly use regular, it is just not as healthy since it has sugar. It’s a small amount though, so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Here is warning on peanut butter for dogs. Veterinarians have a warning for pet owners about an ingredient in some foods — including peanut butter — that can be toxic to your pet. It’s a sweetener, called xylitol , that’s found in different brands of peanut butter, and it can make your pet sick, or even kill them. The ingredient can also cause liver failure.Feb 26, 2018 read label before using for your dog.
Thanks for reminding everyone Deb. I have added a note about xylitol in peanut butter in the recipe card.
I am so excited about this recipe I cannot wait. my dog loves anything with peanut butter. I buy the peanut butter powder because it is Strictly just peanuts my dad recommended it to me because there’s nothing but peanuts there is no sugar no preservatives no salt nothing just peanuts that have been pulverized into a powder and then you add a little bit of water until you get it the consistency that you like I always make it for my dog with her breakfast because she takes a pill and she loves when I put the pillow in her peanut butter so I think this would be great for that Aspies if anybody is interested. Just make up enough to get The amount needed for the recipe. And there you go no worrying if you’re gonna get the wrong or right peanut butter for your fur baby.
Lara, that is such a great idea! The more pure the peanut butter, the better.
This was so easy to make from my doggie molds..They loved this..Thank you..😊 I have one dog that is very picky…
You’re welcome Joyce! I’m so glad your picky dog enjoyed them. Mine is the same way 🙂
Do you melt Coconut oil.
Hi Genna, thanks for asking. Yes, you melt the coconut oil. I added this to the recipe card.
What about using olive oil instead of coconut oil?
Hi Aaron. That should also work. I’ve heard that olive oil can upset some dogs stomachs though, so keep an eye on them and try coconut oil if it doesn’t agree with them.
I just made these and he dough is dry I just added more peanut butter. I’m sure the dogs wont care to much.
Hi Summer, some brands of coconut flour are my dry than others. Adding extra peanut butter is the perfect thing to do. I hope your dogs enjoyed them!
Hi I just made these for my two dachshunds for their 13th birthday! They loved them and I felt good that they were healthy too. I didn’t want to use up my coconut flour, so I did 1/4c coconut and 1/2c oat flour. The oat is not as moist naturally so the dough will be drier and too crumbly. I suggest using 2 eggs if anyone wants to split the flour like I did. Hope this is useful.
Thank you for your recipe.
Hi Kiki, thanks for the 5 star review! I’m happy you were able to modify the recipe, and I’m super happy your dachshunds loved the treats!
Hi! I made the peanut butter treats for my 3 dogs and they LOVE them. One of them is a 12 yr old Pom who has a bunch of dietary restrictions and lucky for me these treats are perfect. The coconut flour is great for her (she needs the fiber) and peanut butter is one of the only extra’s she can have (natural, no sugar or any additives, only ingredient is peanut butter) and since all 3 love these I don’t need to get different treats! I did end up using 2 eggs and a splash of skim milk. I made a huge batch, they freeze great and everyone’s happy. Thank you for this recipe!! P.S. I did try one and it tasted like a coconut cookie.
Thanks so much for the great review Georgia! I’m so happy your dogs love them!
Thank you so much for posting this recipe! I have an 11 year old…we’ll just say mixed breed dog, and he can’t have any grains. He also turns his nose up at many treats, strangely enough. He likes the dried sweet potato treats, and does well on a salmon/sweet potato food. So I thought he might like something different, and this definitely fits the bill! I’ll check back after he’s had one to update. 🙂
Thanks Heather 🙂 I hope your dog enjoys them, please update if you have a chance!
When freezing, do you freeze the doe and cook after defrosting or shape, cook and then freeze?
You can do it either way 🙂
ok, do you know what! My 4 year old wanted to make treats for the dog so i researched a recipe with coconut flour because i had some that i wanted to use, and made these, the kids wanted to taste them so bad and ended up wanting to eat them all LOL. So these are amazing either for us or our furry friend, we will be making more!
Haha, that’s great, Vickie! I’m so glad the entire family enjoyed them 😀
Hello. I just wanted to know the calorie, fat, and carb count per cookie. Did I miss it somewhere or is it not there? Thank you. They look great. Can’t wait to make them.
Hi Simone, thanks for asking. They are as follows:
– Peanut butter: 56 calories, 4 g fat, 4 g total carbs, 3 g protein
– Bad Breath Buster: 56 calories, 4 g fat, 3 g total carbs, 1 g protein
Made a batch yesterday for my 2 boxers. They need to be on limited ingredients due to allergies. They loved them and drool for more! Thanks for the recipe🐾
So happy to hear that, Deb!
