Are you a green tea lover too?
If I’m being honest, I used to really hate matcha. I remember getting a green tea latte at Starbucks in college and taking one sip of it and going “EWW!” I’m honestly not sure what I expected, but it certainly tasted like grass to me then.
My tastebuds sure have developed since that time, because I now love matcha in all forms! Plus I really don’t think it tastes like grass anymore. It does have an earthy taste that some may have to become accustomed to, but it’s one that I really do enjoy.
For those who share a love of all things green tea, I know you fully appreciate good matcha, and sometimes you just want something like this super-frothy vegan matcha latte, am I right?
Making matcha can seem daunting to do correctly, but it really doesn’t have to be! It’s really quite simple and straightforward.
The real trick here is to choose the right milk that compliments, rather than detracts from the taste of the matcha. I find that almond milk can be a bit too strong here, and rice milk or a mild-tasting coconut milk can work quite well!
Once you’ve chosen your milk, you’ll want to start by warming it up, along with some water, on the stove or in the microwave. Transfer to a tall container, such as a ball jar with head room for blending.
Simply add in your matcha powder and sweetener to taste, once the milk is warm. Then take an immersion blender, and gently blend for a few seconds on low. This really helps to get it super-frothy!
If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can use a regular blender or a whisk in a pot on the stove.
How do you get the milk frothy?
My secret weapon is an immersion blender! If you don’t own one, a regular blender works just as well, and a whisk is always an option as a backup.
What is the best matcha to use?
Ceremonial-grade matcha is a higher quality green tea powder, but if you’re intimidated by the price, any matcha is a good place to start!
Can I make it iced?
You most certainly can! Rather than warming up the milk, simply add the cold milk to a jar, add in the sweetener, matcha powder and ice. Add a lid and shake. It’s just as tasty iced too!
